Where to Get Your Bagel Fix in Beijing

Katie Coy theBeijinger 2024-04-13

For bagel lovers in Beijing, there is good news! It seems that more and more bagel spots are popping up in the capital with new places opening and older bagel purveyors opening up new branches. Although there have also been some losses along the way (RIP Green Cow City Cafe), it's great to see that bagel shops are becoming more of a common sight in all corners of Beijing. Here is a look at some of the top spots to fill that bagel-shaped hole in your tummy.

Bang Bagel

Originally based in Shunyi, Bang Bagel has been making moves in recent months, opening up a second shop in Jiuxianqiao just a month or two ago and now opening a brand new third branch in Guomao in February. The menu has a range of very reasonably priced bagelwiches (RMB 27-45), filled bagels, plain bagels and a variety of coffees.

Our personal favorite is the Bagel and the City (RMB 42, pictured), Bang's take on the classic bagel and lox. Choose from one of their fresh bagels – everything, whole wheat walnut or pretzel – and see it smeared with a thick layer of dill-infused cream cheese and topped with delicate smoked salmon, capers, cucumber, onion and black olives. Other bagels that caught our eye were the Florence (RMB 42), featuring pesto chicken and shrimp and arugula, and the Mexico City (RMB 39), which combines chicken, avocado, cheese, tomato and jalapenos.

Catch Bagel

Catch Bagel is taking Beijing by storm! Starting off with just one location near Dongdaqiao, they now have a whopping five locations in the capital, and from a quick look on Dianping, it seems they’ve got even more future branches in the works. Here you can grab some great bagelwiches or keep things simple with a bagel and a choice of topping. For the toppings, there are plenty to choose from, with classics such as Cream Cheese (RMB 36) available at all their locations and a range of other toppings that vary at each branch.

For their bagelwiches, a few of the meatier options are flattened on a grill, which is a nice touch. We are particularly drawn to the Philly Hunks (RMB 69), which is essentially a Philly cheesesteak on a bagel and is as delicious as it sounds. Then there is the eye-catching California Pink (RMB 56), a vegetarian option featuring apple, Italian slow-roasted beetroot, cream cheese, and sweet onion. Their newer branches also have a brand new bagelwich on the menu: the New York Fisherman (RMB 75, pictured), which layers smoked salmon with cream cheese, onions, capers, avocado and tomato.

BigEats & Double O’s

This bagel and sandwich shop based in 798 caused quite the storm when it opened up last year. The go-to order here has to be their speciality: Corned Beef Bagel Sandwich (RMB 68/medium, RMB 128/large), which is stuffed full of their homemade corned beef. Another bagelwich to look out for is the Brie Cheese and Ham (RMB 55, pictured), which sees gooey, melted brie paired perfectly with thick slices of ham. Aside from bagelwiches, they also have some interesting topped bagels on the menu like the Jalapeno and Cheese (RMB 29) and Caramel Almond (RMB 20).

MY.BAGEL

MY.BAGEL has two locations in the capital – one in Shuangjing (currently closed, but reopening Mar 25) and one up in Wudaokou. They’ve got a whole load of bagelwiches on offer, including what is essentially a burger bagel: the Classic Beef Patty (RMB 65), which features a beef patty topped with bacon, cheese, lettuce and tomato. Another intriguing option on the menu is the Shrimp Egg Avocado (RMB 52), featuring fresh shrimp seasoned with thyme and black pepper, two fried eggs and sliced avocado. They also do a range of plain bagels or bagels with fillings such as Peanut Butter (RMB 18), Coconut Chocolate (RMB 18) or Sesame (RMB 18). Aside from bagels, they also have a selection of brunch and salad options too.

The Daily Bagel

This New York-style bagel shop specializes in classic and toasted bagelwiches with a range of signature and traditional fillings on offer. A personal favorite of ours is their Herb Roasted Chicken (RMB 52), which features arugula, slow-roasted cherry tomatoes, and ginger lime aioli in addition to the meat. For steak lovers, a great option is their Love From Philly (RMB 80) which has beef steak, onion, house-made cheese whiz, provolone, and pickled jalapenos just to add a little bit of spice. If you’re looking to pair your bagel with a coffee, they also have some great combo deals available on Meituan Waimai. Rumor has it that they may also soon be opening up a second branch near Dawanglu; we’ll be sure to keep you posted when we learn more.

The Bake Shop

Unlike the above options, The Bake Shop is not dedicated solely to bagels, and as such it offers fewer options compared to the other places on the list. That said, the bagels and bagel-based meals they do offer are top-notch. Our go-to order has to be the Bacon Bagel Benedict (RMB 88) with avocado and burnt butter sauce, or if you want to keep things classic, they offer Salmon Lox and Cream Cheese (RMB 98) as well.
